The King George III Collection in the Science Museum, London, is a unique assembly of early apparatus for demonstrating scientific principles. The items in it are varied, richly informative about 18th century science, and often visually attractive. Two main groups within the collection reflect contrasting aspects of natural philosophy at the time: private science, represented by the fine instruments which George III commissioned for his own collection, and public science, seen through the workaday demonstration equipment used by an itinerant lecturer, Stephen Demainbray.
