When a person was killed in Athens, the attitude of the Athenians to the event was a complex one. Vengeance and retribution was required and it was up to the family to obtain it for him. Then, all citizens were considered polluted, but some are more polluted than others. The 'stain' affects the whole state, especially those who associated with the killer. Fascinating degrees of guilt. Nice tight binding.
